Smart meter adoption is prevalent worldwide with the global penetration of smart meters booming in electricity, gas and water metering markets. The two-way communication enabled by this technology helps utilities and their customers address energy conservation mandates but also meet the ever-increasing demands to analyze continuous consumption data, and optimize total cost of ownership.
Smart meters are becoming more widespread across Asia and BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa). Technical specifications within the various regions and countries require individualized features in respective battery systems to ensure reliable performance during the required lifetime. Saft’s research and development (R&D) team customized its traditional primary lithium design to meet the unique needs of the smart metering markets in Asia and respective BRICS countries, and now offers a new Eternacell series of lithium batteries.
The Eternacell product range consists of three cell sizes (1/2 AA, AA and A), all based on the same construction (bobbin) and chemistry (Li-SOCl2, Lithium Thionyl Chloride). The batteries deliver reliability, long lifetime, high pulse capabilities and adaptability in harsh environments across a wide temperature span, with a price range that meets market expectations.

The products for the Eternacell series are manufactured in Saft’s Zhuhai facility in China, with key components imported from Europe. A brand new advanced technology plant in Zhuhai was opened in early 2016 to meet Asia’s increasing market demand. With the expansion of the new site, production capacity of primary lithium cells has doubled.
Leveraging Saft’s best-in-class production facilities with mass production capabilities, Eternacell batteries not only share the cells’ design, chemistry and construction with Saft, but also the full automation production lines, processes and control procedures.
